    Research Interests:

    - Childhood Tumors
Dr. Shehata has begun to integrate genomics, proteomics, metabolomics etc. into tumor characterization studies. Under the direction of Dr. Shehata, the Department of Pathology at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) created a tumor bio-repository (tumor bank) in 2003. Dr. Shehata uses his tumor bank and new sequencing technologies to characterize the cancer genome, identify candidate genes that denote class of diagnosis, prognosis, and potential therapeutic targets, and ultimately help pediatric oncology physicians and scientists develop targeted molecular therapies. Recently, he and his team identified angiogenic genes that contribute to the development of Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma. These novel results were presented in a platform presentation entitled "Molecular Analysis of Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma (ASPS) Identifies A Strong Angiogenic Gene Expression Impacting Gene Targeted Therapy" at an international pathology meeting. Future studies will continue to understand the role of angiogenic genes in tumor development.

    - Hirschsprung Disease
Dr. Shehata has developed a new staining method for expedient diagnosis of Hirschsprung disease and other forms of intestinal dysmotility in children. This new method has recently been submitted for publication.

    - Histiocytoid Cardiomyopathy Registry
Histiocytoid Cardiomyopathy (HC) is Dr. Shehata's primary research project, which he has been focused on for over 20 years. By creating an HC registry and collecting over 120 cases, he has been able to identify two potential genes responsible for HC. Additionally, knowing the complexity of this heterogenous disease, he performed whole exome sequencing and recently identified two new causative genes. Dr. Shehata presented his data in Europe as a platform presentation entitled "Knockdown of ndufb11 in Zebrafish Model Results in Cardiac Anomalies, Confirming the Role of the Newly Recognized NDUFB11 in Histiocytoid Cardiomyopathy Pathogenesis," which was well received by the international community. Dr. Shehata continues to research HC and is now focused on the familial inheritance pattern, which represents 5% of all known cases of HC. He plans to extend this project into the adult population by studying arrhythmia of unknown etiology.

    - Neuroblastoma Analysis
Dr. Shehata is collaborating with a biomedical engineering team at Georgia Tech to analyze certain subtypes of neuroblastomas. The aim is to compare anaplastic variant to conventional stroma rich variants. Together they will utilize mass spectrometry and whole image slide processing in order to understand the molecular/genetic base of the anaplastic variant.

    - Causes of Still Birth
Through a nationwide NIH grant, we performed fetal and placental evaluation in an attempt to find causes of unexplained still births. Several publications were produced from this study.

    - Osteosarcoma Research
Dr. Shehata has been collecting tumor samples from osteosarcoma patients (pre-treatment, post-treatment, and cultured fibroblasts). A comparative genomic hybridization study is in progress for those patients who had these three components saved in the bio-repository focusing to understand the mechanism and predisposition to osteosarcoma.

    - Billiary Atresia
Dr. Shehata and his colleague Dr. Abramowsky represent Emory/CHOA in a multi-center consortium studying the billiary remnants from infants who were diagnosed with billiary atresia in an attempt to identify the underlying cause. The group meets 3-4 times per year to review a collection of those remnants.

    - Cardiovascular Pathology
In addition to Dr. Shehata's Histiocytoid Cardiomyopathy research, he is studying two other forms of cardiomyopathy including Adriamycin Induced Cardiomyopathy and Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy/Dysplasia. Furthermore, his interest in cardiovascular pathology extends to the reason for graft failure for which he co-authored the results showing that cardiac steatosis can lead to a deleterious outcome in those patients. The focus now is using the molecular means to evaluate the relation between chimerism and graft failure. The preliminary data was presented in an international meeting showing that chimerism can lead to graft failure. The manuscript is in progress. Finally, Dr. Shehata and his team are utilizing whole slide image signal processing of cardiac biopsies of transplant patients to identify a more accurate and producible method to grade the degree of rejection.

    Clinical Focus:

I practice and teach in the area of pediatric anatomic pathology, primarily at the Egleston campus of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University School of Medicine. My primary focus is in the area of cardiovascular pathology in general, and specifically in Histiocytoid Cardiomyopathy where I have created a world wide registry. In addition, I focus in childhood tumors with an emphasis in diagnostic, molecular and genetic basis. Furthermore, I have developed an internship program where I mentor pre-med students and medical students to prepare them for their medical training. Some of these students came from outside of the United States to join my internship program. All of my students participate in clinical research, international presentations and publications throughout their internship.
