Cytopathology forms a core component of the residency
training program at Emory with rotations divided between Emory University Hospital and
Grady Memorial Hospital. This optimizes the exposure to a wide variety of clinical
cytopathology specimens that currently total around 65,000 of which over 4,000 are fine needle
aspirations, shared between the two hospitals. On the FNA service, residents serve
as proactive members of a diagnostic team and as true consultants in their capacity as "interventional
cytopathologists". They review the clinical history with the referring physician,
review the pertinent radiographic data and perform the FNA under the supervision of a
board certified cytopathologist. Use of the ancillary techniques such as immunohistochemistry
and flow cytometry applicable to cytologic material is available and provide ample basis
for interesting research projects during the rotation. Opportunities for research in
application of proteomics to diagnostic cytopathology are also available.
